Hello and thank you for all of you who regularly visit my site and an even bigger thank to all of you who have sent me some great thank you emails and purchased my premium models over the past few years.
As you may or may not have notice my last post on tom3d4.com was almost a year ago this isn’t because I gave up or moved on its because I got tired of modelling constantly and never having anything to show for it, When I started this site I always intended to have loads of new content every week but there are now thousands of sites like mine and with huge sites like turbosquid.com it kind of make my efforts pointless!
I have spent almost a year learning new skills from scratch, I got the idea to used my CAD skills to enable me to actually manufacture my designs, To accomplish this I had to completely learn new software, I chose Solidworks because of it great CAM integration. I have spent months doing online tutorials reading books on the program and have finally got to grips with it and I can tell you that its very different to Cinema 4D.
Learning new software was the simple part of my plan the biggest problem I had was how to manufacture the CAD models, I thought of having them made professionally but that was to expensive, I thought about buying a 3D Printer but that was even more expensive and not very versatile and then I stated to learn about CNC Milling, Its the cheaper option but perhaps the more technical one. I spent £2000/$3200 on a basic CNC machine, I've had it for 6 months and to begin with I thought I was going to be able to do amazingly complex things and make a ton of money but the learning curve was and is still huge! Remember too that I'm learning everything from free online sources, I have had no professional help.
I will admit that I greatly over estimated how easy it would be manufacture my designs using the CNC Machine but I have lowered my ambition and have started very small and I'm slowly become more and more proficient at using the machine, I have goals in mind of what I want to manufacture in the future (more on that later) but for know I just want to tell you about my first saleable creations!!
I'll tell you all about it in a few days, So check back soon.
Tom
